 '지구의 밤'은 다큐멘터리의 신기원이다!

 다큐멘터리를 매혹적이게 하는 매우 중요한 요소 중 하나가 신기술 접목이다. 그 중에도 핵심은 새로운 카메라다.

 초소형 카메라가 생기면서 새 둥지나 개미 굴 안을 들여다 볼 수 있게 됐다. 액션캠은 고속으로 히말라야까지 비행하는 독수리의 활공을 1인칭 시점으로 감상할 수 있게 했다. 적외선 카메라는 인간의 눈으로는 보기 힘들었던 밤의 세계를 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 열어줬다. 그럼에도, 어둠 속 야생의 세계는 여전히 많은 부분이 미지의 영역이었다. 기술의 한계라고만 말해 두면 될 것 같다, 라고 적지만 사실 세부내용을 잘 모르기에...

  어쨌든 기술의 발전은 이 미지의 영역도 오래 방치해 두지는 않았다. 저조도 카메라와 고감도 열화상 카메라(?)로 그믐날 아프리카 초원에서 펼쳐지는 생과 사의 드라마를 대낮에 보는 것처럼 생생하게 담아낸다. 그런 다큐 작품이 바로 넷플릭스의 '지구의 밤'이다.

 아프리카는 물론이고 한밤의 바다에서, 정글에서, 그리고 도시에서, 동물들에게 무슨 일이 벌어지는지를 바로 눈앞에서 보는 듯이 재생시켜주는 작품이다. 위에 예고편 대표화면이 조명 하나 없는 아프리카 사바나의 심야에 찍은 장면임이 밑겨지는가?

 '지구의 밤'에는 먹고 먹히는 야생의 법칙이 주로 담겨서 애잔한 마음도 없진 않다. 하지만 경이로운 장면들이 가득하기에 보더라도 분명 후회하지 않을 작품이다.

 'Night on Earth', the latest nature documentary from Netflix, never stopped me from being surprised.

 With the most cutting-edge technologies, they put the high-tech low-light camears into the wilderness. And, the results are beyond the description.

 I am not a great fan of nature docs except for oceanic ones. But, 'Nigth on Earth' seized my attention as soon as it played.

 It is because it reveals the dark side of the nature. I mean, it shows what happens in the literally 'dark' world of nature, where no man can ever see. It discovers the world unknown to us, as we have seen only a part with infrared cameras. That makes this work so fantastic that I could never cease to wonder for the whole time.

 Netflix has been very supportive for documentary films like this. And, it has accomplished wonderful effects. This work is another addition to that. Well done, Netflix!
