Cave divers flock to South Australian farms to explore what lies beneath

 호주의 사우스오스트레일리아(SA) 주 남동쪽에 위치한 마운트 갬비어Mount Gamiber란 곳의 남쪽에 있는 싱크홀Sink Hole 이야기.

 트레버 애시비Tevor Ashby의 농장 한 가운데 위치한 '더 샤프트The Shaft'.

The Shaft, as it is known, is the darkest and deepest recorded sinkhole in the region, dropping more than 120 metres.

 '더 샤프트'라고 알려진 이곳은 그 지역에서 기록이 된 싱크홀 중에는 가장 어둡고 깊다. 120m 이상 들어간다.

It was discovered by the owner's grandfather when he was ploughing a paddock and the horse put its hoof through the surface.

 농장주인의 할아버지가 목장에서 쟁기질을 하던 중 말발굽이 빠지면서 발견하게 됐다.

A pile of rubble 35 metres down was the family's unsuccessful attempt to fill it.

 35m 아래엔 돌무더기가 있는데 땅주인네가 구덩이를 메꾸려다가 실패한 흔적이다.

 들어가는 구멍이 워낙 좁아서 잠수 장비랑 사람이 따로 들어가야 할 정도라고 하는 재미있는 곳이다.

 이곳에서 멀지 않은 곳에는 '킬스비 싱크홀Kilsby's Sinkhole'이라는 곳이 있다.

 이곳은 '더 샤프트'와는 달리 사다리를 타고 내려가서 잠수할 수 있는 65m 깊이의 화강암 공동(空洞)이다

Kilsby's Sinkhole is a 65-metre deep limestone cavity in the middle of Graham Kilsby's sheep property and one of the most popular dive sites in the region.

 '킬스비 싱크홀'은 65m 깊이의 화강암 공동으로 그레이엄 킬스비의 양떼 목장 정중앙에 있으며 이 지역에서 매우 인기있는 다이빙 지점 중 하나이다

The sinkhole is renowned for the clarity of the water and the beams of light that pierce through it on a sunny day.

 '킬스비 싱크홀'은 물이 투명하고 맑은 날 이를 뚫고 비치는 햇빛으로 정평이 나 있다.

 이 지역은 또 1970년대에 호주 국방부에 무기 시험장으로 대여를 해 준데다, 요즘은 다이빙 지점으로 사용료를 받고 있다고 한다. 땅 하나 잘 두니 이런 짭짤한 부수입까지!
