육지도 갈매기 & 길냥이

 대한민국 섬에는 어딜 가나 갈매기가 넘쳐나는 법. 욕지도도 예외는 아니었다. 누군가가 먹을거리를 던져 주거나, 최소한 떨어뜨리기를 학수고대하는 게 갈매기다. 이날 욕지도에서는 지인의 지인이 낚시로 잡아올린 우럭 손질하면서 내장을 바다로 던지자마자 갈매기들이 쟁탈전을 벌이기 시작했다.

 이 녀석은 각도를 잘못 쟀는지 그냥 스쳐 지나가기만 했다.

 You can spot seagulls wherever island you go in Korea. Yokjido was not an exception. They wait for someone to give them something to eat, or at least to drop one. On this day, my friend's friend threw intestines of rockfish that he fished up himself. Then, they began a battle for taking it.

 This one had a wrong guess for flying trajectory and just passed by.

 이 녀석이 처음으로 정위치를 잡아서 내려앉았다. This one was the first to land on a right course to the intestines.

 누구도 방해하지 않으면 잠시나마 여유를 보였다. Nonody interrupted it, and it had a lil time before taking the intestines.

우럭 내장을 한 조각씩! ⓒ octocho.

 이젠 모든 갈매기들이 본격적으로 달려들기 시작했다. 맨 먼저 도착한 녀석은 자기 몫을 챙겨서 날아가고 있고.

 Now, suddenly, all seagulls began to rush for the food. The first arrived took his piece and flew away.

 나도 좀 먹자!

'고양이 섬'이라 불릴 정도로 고양이 천국이었다는 욕지도. ⓒ octocho.

 욕지도는 '고양이 섬'이라고 불릴 정도로 고양이 천국이었다고 한다. 그런데, 너무 많다 보니 문제가 됐고, 포획해서 중성화 한 뒤 풀어놓는 'TNR(Trap-Neuter-Release)' 사업을 벌여서 이를 해소했단다. 그러더니 어느 순간부터 개가 많아졌다는 게 지인의 설명이다. 데리고 와서는 버리고 가는 사람들 때문에... 다만, 이틀 동안 개는 한 마리도 못 보긴 했다.

 Yokjido used to be a 'Cat Island' according to my friend's wife. It became a proble. And the authority executed 'TNR(Trap-Neuter-Release) policy' to solve it. But, it began to have more dogs than cats after some people abandon their pet dogs on the island when they left... However, I couldn't see any dog for 24 hours.

 이 '치느냥이'는 식사 중 내가 부르는 소리에 고개를 두리번거렸다. 포장마차에서 물고기를 얻어와서 먹는 중이었다. 사람들이 길냥이를 쫓지 않는 게 퍽이나 평화스러웠다.

 This 'Cheese Cat' turned the head as I called it. It was eating a big portion of fish, which an owner of tent restaurant gave. I felt it very peaceful as nobody tried to kick stray cats away.

식사 중 돌아본 지라 혀를 다시는 냥이. ⓒ octocho.

 고개를 돌린 김에 혀를 낼롬거리며 입맛을 다시는 녀석.

 The cat rubbed the upper lip with the tongue.

다시 식사에 돌입. ⓒ octocho.

 그리고는 다시 식사 중.

 Then, it got back into eating.
